black screen when booting

After booting I come to a black screen before I get to the desktop, nothing happens, I wait, then press F1 and it boots to windows and is fine,if i don't press f1 it will sit there forever.

Was there another operating system on the machine at one time? Go to control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery. Click on the drop down menu under default operating system. Is there a second OS listed?

No second os. It's a laptop that came with xp only ........it just happened one day after some crashes, suddenly the black screen .......it boots to safe mode fine without the black screen

If it boots to safe mode without a problem, run msconfig and uncheck whatever you don't need to load into memory at boot time. Reboot and don't return to normal startup.

I had already disabled everything in startup a while back working on another problem, it has no effect.
I was also working on modifying the services that were running. It seems to me that the black screen showed up when I was disabling some of the services. I checked them out thoroughly so I knew what I was doing, but, I think it could be related to that.
I have a list of what I unchecked as I progressed, but I just can't see a service creating this,
I will try turning some back on to see what effect there is. . . .
