Hi, I managed to turn all graphics/visual effects/animations off with a setting at Display Properties - Settings - Advanced. My screen immediately turned completely black. When I now start my computer, I can see the loading display (with windows logo) but when finished loading, instead of the welcome screen I only have a black screen. Everything else is working - if I enter my password and press enter I can hear the login sound (only seeing a black screen).
Does anyone have an idea of how to fix this?
I am using an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics card.

I don't know if it will help, but try safe mode. (tap F8 during the boot)
If all else fails: Just try a friend's card and install the driver. Then put your original card back in and install it's driver. I think that should work.
FWIW to XP users: When you click on the 'Command Prompt' you are just causing the 'Command prompt' to be displayed. This prompt gives you access to NTVDM.EXE, the 'NT Virtual DOS Manager'.
