Try booting into Safe Mode -- reset your display settings -- reboot.

Use your Windows XP cd or recovery disk and choose the repair option.
If you see a command prompt enter “bootcfg /rebuild” w/o quotes—enter.
(try “bootcfg/?” if /rebuild doesn't work and choose appropriate switch)

Beyond that (if that doesn't work) a clean install / full recovery might be
the best way for you to go. Good Luck!

The XP CD will use generic display drivers when you boot from the CD. Boot the machine with the XP CD in the CD-ROM. If it does not boot, you will need to check your BIOS settings to enable your machine to boot from CD-ROM before the HD. To do this, at the first boot screen press F2 (for most machines -- others might use ESC, F1, or even combination keys -- the initial boot screen will have that information for your specific system). Once in BIOS, navigate to "Boot" or "Boot Order" to set the CD-ROM to boot before the HD. Then, with the XP CD still in the CD-ROM, try again.

You can try the Repair option first if you'd like or just go on and do the clean install (full recovery). It's pretty intuitive and the options are clearly given. You shouldn't have any trouble with it. Also, a lot of machines will give you an F11 option at boot from which you can perform the full recovery.

Good Luck to you, Abby! Hope all goes well.

It worked! It just deleted everything that I had on there, but at least it works now! Thank you very, very much.
I have one more question about the computer though. It won't let me change the screen resolution. It stays at a really low level and you just can't change it. And when I go to the monitor tab, it just says default monitor and it won't let me change that either. Can you help me with this?

Abbey,

*Right Click on any free space on your desktop
*Choose “Properties” from the drop down menu
*Once in Display Properties left click the “Settings” Tab
*You will see options to change color and resolution settings....
just move the slide to the desired resolution

If you can't adjust the settings there then you will need to install the specific drivers for your video card. Since it is a Dell, you probably received a second cd that contains
all the drivers for your system. Open the cd, open the folder (display or video) that contains the video drivers. Just double click on the appropriate driver and Windows will install it for you. Reboot and you should be good to go.

If you do not have a driver cd, you can download the driver for your video display from Dell's support web page. Try here: http://support.dell.com/?~ck=mn.
