OS: XP Home sp2
CPU/Ram: Celeron 2.66Ghz 1Gb ram
Product: Dell Dimention 3000
Comment:

On switch on, monitor shows Dell splash screen. Screen then changes to black with blue banner at the top with www.dell.com in it. A line of text then appears and disappears so quick you can't read it. Screen then goes black.
I have accessed the diagnostics usin F12 and run a full test. All passed.
I have tried to boot from the recovery CD. After a message saying that windows will now check your system configuation, screen goes black and stays that way even if left for a hour or so.
I have also tried to boot from another original XP CD. Same result as above.
I have even tried to reset to BIOS by removing and replacing the battery. Still no joy.
Any ideas anyone???

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode(F6)?

F6 has no effect. I don't think the XP OS is even getting started. As soon as the black screen arrives there is no HDD activity.

If you have a floppy drive, see if a memory test will run.

There is a version to create a bootable floppy diskette and/or an ISO for creating a CD.

How did this start? Did you make some changes to the system?

The PC came with a diagnostics partition preinstalled which I can access. I've run all the tests which includes a memory test. No changes have been made to the system. Just one day ok...gone the next. Don't think its virus related either as Norton 2007 does a full scan each night. The system tends to be left on and is only powered down once or twice a week.

Thanks for the help so far.
