black login screen+when xp loads

My battery has not been charging recently so i have been running it on ac with 0% battery life. earlier today it kept switching back and forth from ac to battery, everytime i would have to adjust the power chord to fix it. one time the comp just turned off since it was running off battery for too long (didnt fix it in time). when i powered it back on, i saw the xp load screen fine, but the login screen never showed up, just the cursor. i typed in my pw and windows booted up, but again, i couldnt see anything except a black screen. how do i fix this? thanks.

just a follow-up: i booted up my comp in safe mode and saw the desktop and login screen fine. do i need to do something with my video drivers? if so, how do i do that?
