black box instead of cursor

Just noticed when I booted my computer this morning that I now have a black box showing up when I move my cursor over a subject area to type. Once I type in a subject the box turns gray in color and has a symbol that looks like a capitol "I" in the middle of the box. The gray box is almost like a watermark since you can see through it when you place it over type or objects. My cursor is only partialy visible and is behind the box no matter where I move it on my desktop. Any clues on what this is?
I have all the current updates for my Norton Internet Security and ran a virus scan in safe mode to see if there was any virus. I am all clear of any virus' so it is not that. I also ran my spyware software (SpyBot, Ad-aware) and nothing shows up there either.
If anyone knows please respond. Thanks in advance, sprank

FJB, Thanks for the response. I also thought of the system restore procedure, but then I went into the control panel and selected the mouse. From there I went into the pointer settings and changed my pointer.
Once I changed the pointer the black/gray box was gone. Just out of curiosity I changed back to my previous pointer setting and now it is working properly. VERY STRANGE!
Thinking that maybe this had come from a new update, but I did not update yesterday. No idea what happened?
