My computer keeps freezing completely (cant even get CTRL-ALT-DEL up). Or the screen will just turn black. I had this problem with Win98 so i took the opportunity to upgrade to XP but its still happening. On rebooting i check Event Viewer and its showing the following message:-
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x71), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability.
Anyone got any ideas what this means? Please help.

Reinstalling XP install by booting to the CD. You'll see a message at the bottom of the screen that says "Press F6 to install third party drivers". Press F5 at this time and in a short moment you will see a screen where you can choose your system type. Choose Standard PC. To me it sounds like your system is having a problem running in ACPI mode. This will disable that.

It's easy and safe to disable ACPI from the device manager in XP. Just right click on it in the device manager, choose update driver, click I will choose the driver to install, and click on Standard PC. Reboot the PC and it will redetect all your devices.
