BIOS updates are usually to fix very specific problems, which probably don't apply to your setup, or to provide support for new hardware, such as a faster CPU, additional RAM, etc. Read the ReadMe.txt which usually accompanies a BIOS upgrade. It should list all of the items addressed by the update, so that you can decide whether or not the upgrade pertains to you. Most likely, it will not.

Also, since the advantages/perils of a BIOS upgrade have already been stated above, let me add that I rehab a lot (for a non-IT professional) of laptops. I always upgrade the BIOS when I get a new/old laptop. After flashing the BIOS on over 100 laptops, I haven't had one go badly yet.
