Hello Friends!

My friend's laptop computer needs to be reformatted.

However, in order to boot from CD or Floppy Drive, you know that his BIOS should be configured.

The problem is: she doesn't know her BIOS password.

How do we solve this?

Thank you very much!

Nandy

First check the vendor of your notebook i had similar problem with fujitsu-siemens laptop they did not provide me online with solution of how to reset the bios becouse of security reasons, so i had to disasemble the box and to found reset jumper by myself.
If there some chance to get password from previos ouner this is the best way.Usualy the factory does not put bios pass so find who did it .

Hi Nandy,

I assume you tried to boot on FD or CD and it went straight to HD.

Shot in the dark. Try:

password

for the password.

If that does not work, you might be able to clear the PW from XP.

What is the EXACT make / model of the laptop?

And what is the BIOS make and version?

OK, I forgot about the BIOS make and version, but I remember the model was COMPAQ, but I'm not exactly sure.

Thanks Avenger77 and M2!

Is there any more way?

Sorry to say it but in laptops there is usually no way to release or reset the bios password outside the factory without knowing the current set pwd. There is no jumper on the motherboard like there is on desktop models. Laptops are deliberately made that way as a theft deterrent.

I would not attemp opening a laptop in any event.

You can try this proceedure. You will be using a "command prompt" and a windows utility which you are probably not familiar with. The instructions must be followed EXACTLY. So if there is any doubt, ASK.

To get a command prompt:

start > run > cmd > [enter]

You should now see a white on black text screen, with a prompt and a blinking cursor.

Now you need to type these four lines, each followed by [enter].

The second and third lines begin with an O [letter O] NOT a ZERO.

The characters following the first 7 and the 1 ARE ZEROS.

====================================
DEBUG
O 70 10
O 71 FF
Q
====================================

If you get a msg saying XP has prevented direct access to hardware, nothing has changed.

Otherwise it probably worked.

restart and see if you can access BIOS.

Jon,

It should not effect your files, BUT you may need to reset the HD in BIOS.

Kill CMOS

I don't know if it will work with XP running.

You'll just have to try it.

If after CMOS clear it doesn't boot, go into BIOS and set HD to 'auto detect'.

I was given a Sony Vaio laptop and it has Phoenix on it. It has no HD and has a BIOS password that I dont know. I have tried many of the passwords found in the net and cant seem to get around it.

I need to at least change the boot sequence so I can add a hard drive and set it up. I have been advised to send it to Sony for $263 and 4-6 weeks wait time. They will reset it back to factory standards.

Please advise.
