Bios in Optiplex GX260 Hard Drive Problem

March 3, 2010 at 14:35:54
Specs: Windows XP
I have an Optiplex GX260 that will only boot up to the Setup Bios and can't find the hard drive. I have been running it with Windows XP Pro and until recently it worked ok but now won't. I think that the Bios information which is the A09 series isn't correct. Where can I find the line by line information that should be in the bios so that the computer will see the hard drive? Please help.

Did you recently move the computer? If so, the cables could have become loosened. Just open the case, and check the cables for the power and the MOBO connection.

No changes need to be made to the bios for it to detect a hard drive. There should be an option to auto detect the drive. If the drive is not being detected, there is a problem with either the drive or cable.

Restart your computer.
As the system restarts, press <F2> to enter system setup.
When the system setup screen appears, press <Alt><F> to load the Dell default settings.
The computer beeps when the settings are restored.

Verify that the time, date, and year are correct and that the Secondary Drive 0 option is set to Auto.
Press <Esc> and then press <Enter> to save your changes and exit.

i worked for a week trying to get this to recognize my hard drive / resetting to factory defaults fixed the problem. my daughter was having the same problem and she did the same thing and her system is recognizing the hard drive.

when we went to check hard drive status instead of auto we were seeing detect.
on rebooting system the hard drives were recognized in both machines. we couldnt believe both systems were having the same problem at the same time. if all else fails go to dell and read the manual. I cant believe and ALT+F fixed the problem. go luck and happy computing Linda The sr citizen. in sc and daugher in utah.
