I was given a Compaq Presario 700 laptop computer. There's two problems with it, the most serious is what I suspect to be the bios battery, if that's what it's call.
When I power it up I get two warnings/errors;
1. Check data and time settings.
2. System CMOS checksum bad - Default configuration usedF-1 Boot
F-10 Computer SetupAfter pressing F-1 to boot or F-10 to reset the date/time and then boot there's no problem, the computer works fine (except for a well used touch pad).
So my question is;
If this is a bios battery problem can I access it myself or is it buried so deep that you gotta take the whole thing apart?
Where is it located?
I got four accesses on the bottom;
1. Battery
2. Hard Drive
3. RAM
4. Analog ModemCan't see a battery anywhere.
Tks for your help.

The battery should be a nickel sized silver flat coin shaped unit like an oversized watch battery. Make sure you pay attention to which side is up and try not to touch both poles together. That can drain the battery substancially. Can't be of much help on locating the battery though. Manual should be helpful.

Start at this page and you will be able to get to the manual for your exact model number. When I used presario 700 there were 339 different models. That will be able to locate your bios battery. They are usually number 2032 batteries. Follow OtheHill's warnings carefully. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/... Bluejay

Hey OtH...
Tks for the reply.
I got no manual that's why I threw the question out there.
I got the feeling I'll need to take the back cover off....but I don't know maybe you access it from the keyboard side, under that cover..??

Take the pc to your local computer shop and have them replace the battery.
We get too many posts of novices changing their batteries only to then post back due to the host of problems that was created.
Imagine the power of knowing how to internet search

wanderer,
post No. 5, I've had tech's tell me that they would'nt open a laptop, they would prefer to send it to the manufacturer to be fixed.The limits of my language are the limits of my world.

An unimportant correction. :-)
It's really a CMOS battery not a Bios battery. Kind of a nitpicking correction because the CMOS chip (or portion of a chip) is where the bios stores it's settings.It also supplies power for the real time clock.

Clarity is a good thing, thanks.
brillser...wanderer...I called the local computer shop, said they'd do the J.O.B. for 30 buck.

Hey bluejay...
Wanted to tell you I contacted HP/Compaq Customer Care via your link. We exchanged a few emails; they provide detailed steps and sent me a pdf copy of the tech manual thru http:\\www.sendspace.com
Couldn't be more helpful.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
