Hello. I have installed XP on a newly built
computer. Since the installation I have
realized that I would be better off with
windows 98 SE. I am trying to install windows
98 SE of winXP. windows 98SE can only set up
in DOS. The last try is where I have
formatting problems.Here is a list of what I have tried, I don't
know what else to do.(keep in mind that i am
under the impression that to install 98 you
cannot have an NTFS partition on drive C,
which i have)First: I made a MS-DOS bootdisk from windows
XP. When I tried to use it I got "disk I/O
error"(keep in mind my drive works fine,
reads perfectly)Second: I tried to delete the NTFS partition
with XP on it during XP setup. This could not
be done because setup was using files on this
drive.Third: I installed a second copy of XP on a
different partition using FAT. Started setup
and tried to delete the old NTFS(C:)
partition from XPsetup, I got the same error
message that setup was using files from this
partition and could not delete the
partition(C:).Fourth: From the New copy of XP on the FAT
file system (on the actual desktop), I tried
to reformat my first partition(C:)(NTFS) to
FAT32(this should let me install 98).*When formatting the progress bar gets to
100%, then tells me "windows was unable to
format this drive"(Im in trouble if I cant
change C: to FAT 32)*This seems to be where my real problem is.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

If you are wanting to start from scratch you don't necessarily have to delete your partions. If you have a startup disk from windows 95 put it in and restart your computer. It will read the disk and allow you to format your C: drive effectively without losing your partitions. I've done this numerous time and have had no problem.
