Beta? what is it

I'm New here. Can you explain what a " beta " download is , why i should take it or not. I'm on Vista. Thanks for your help.

Beta software is software that is still in testing, but has had the majority of the serious bugs worked out. Medion MIM 2080 Toshiba T2130CT Macintosh Performa 450 All working wonderfully.
