Well, none of them will do a perfect job. Spybot and AdAware are generally considered to be the best. And, while AV programs are not specifically designed to find spyware and adware, sometimes they do. So, if you don't have a good one, get one. Essential. I always install the combination of 'Adaware' and 'Spybot', to check occasionally, together with 'Spywareblaster' which sits in the background permanently monitoring for nasties.
