There's no "best" resolution. You need to query the user guide of the screen, to find out what resolutions it can accept, and which not. Remember that the resolution will be mentioned WITH a refresh rate, and this is very important.
The setup in Windows has been very similar for ages, that is the simple part. Be aware that setting wrong resolutions CAN lead to hardware failure (of the screen).
The above information is independant of Windows version, client or server, LCD or classic screen.
