I use Norton Personal Firewall and it is great no problems. The one built into XP is pretty poor but good idea MS.

The Built in firewall is pretty damn rock solid to be honest, you just can't configure ports so it is kind of useless but it does stop incoming traffice rather well. As far as Zone Alarm Pro goes, I've been using it now for quite some time. I just do not load it at startup. I load it after Xp has gone threw it's startup process. I have not had one stability problem with ZA Pro running it this way. Yes, it takes 1 extra mouse click to get ZA running, big deal. I have not used Norton's Personal Fire Wall, The only other one I have used without problems in Xp is Tiny's personal firewall which is also free, I just didn't care for the user interface.

This is probably why sometimes it won't let me access the internet as soon as I start XP because my ZA is autostart. :(

Hey, Prolog. I can almost bet that is causing your problem, that is why I just stuck a short cut in the quick launch tray so after Xp boots, I just click the ZA icon 1 time and away she goes, no problems at all.

I used ZA for over a year.
I am now using Tiny. I like it much better than ZA.
More configurable. Great firewall.

Tiny is hard to be configured. If you are a novice, you would have a headdache dealing with Tiny. ZA Pro has all features Tiny has and easy to use. If you want be free from problem just use ZA Free edition. It will do all for you.

Don't forget that starting up ZoneAlarm only after XP launches all of its startup processes is insecure - especially with regard to viruses that may be present on your system which do things like disable certain firewall functionality or set up connections before ZoneAlarm can stop it.

If you use ZoneAlarm and it causes internet connectivity problems then it is best to either specify that ZoneAlarm starts with an Internet Lock so it does not try and do anything clever whilst XP is loading (potentially causing problems), restart ZoneAlarm or restart Windows and try again. If the problem persists then use a separate, simple, firewall specifically for XP startup and then close it when you have openned ZoneAlarm. Or use a different firewall altogether.
