What is the best computer to purchase and why. We need another computer because ours screwed up. We had a HP. What do you think. Thanks for your help!

HP/Compaq, Dell, Gateway, etc are for people who don't know anything about computers.
The best is a custom built system.
Asus A7N8X-X

512mb PC3200
Ti4200/8X 128mb
WDC 60GB

I agree with Jam. The only advantage to a dell, etc. is the warranty, but many have had problems with tech support for those machines.

Try this site. This guy is pretty active on this forum and he built my computer, which is awsome.
tenacity, patience, and perseverance because…... I AM THE HUMAN

Try building your own. You will learn a lot and get a lot of satisfaction out of it. You get to choose your own components and you will be able to tailor it to your specific needs.
Plus you will never be too scared to open it to clean it (have you seen how much dust/fluff can get into the fan?) or to fix it.
If you do not want to do that then get a custom made system made from generic components. This gives you the best upgrade options.
Bespoke systems (Dell, HP, Compaq) are not worth it. Their upgradability is also very poor. If you want to upgrade you have to in many cases go back to them and it is costly. Also you cannot touch your PC during the warranty period or you would invalidate it.

☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.

If you are asking the question, then I would say buy one. I recommend Dell. Every one of the posts have some good points, but I disagree with a lot of them as well. Times have changed and for the cost of a new dell, you probably won't have to upgrade it at all, just buy a new one instead. I mean they (Dell) just had a deal for a machine for under $500 and that included a flat panel monitor! Now, Granted this wasn't a gaming machine, but for the majority of people it probably would have been fine. I've built a lot of systems in the past, but unless you are using illeagal software, then it would be difficult to build one cheaper.

Build your own, don't buy Dell, they're s$£t!!, There customer support is crap, primium rate(UK) numbers, only to be told " Sorry we can't help at this time" . Pants mate, IF you have to buy "ready made" with "Software you don't need", than Packard Bell is the choice, there Customer Support is better than most, They wont keep you waiting, and they will tell you how it is, and you have upgradability depending on what system you choose.
Good Luck in building your machine, that, to be honest is your best bet by far, only you can choose what software you want, and you will have far more confidence in troubleshooting.
Hope this helps
The world is full of willing people, some are willing to work, others are willing to let them; just a thought!

IBM What IBM? They quit the PC business and sold the division to Lenovo Group of China. It's all over the internet news.

Overhere in the UK, they seem to think PCs may come down in price as a result of the MultiBillion $ deal, good news for us system builders, becouse more companies may go to the Chinese market. Thats what our news is saying, we will have to wait and find out!

All of those >$500 PC's are junk, even for regular use. They usually come with something like a Celeron D at 2 GHz, 256MB of RAM, a 60GB HDD, and then they throw in a crap LCD just to get all the people out there who don't know s*** about computers to buy them.
Do yourself a favor and do some research and build a computer. You'll learn more and you'll be able to tell people that you built your own computer.
Alert me after you respond otherwise I'll forget to come back.

The January 2005 issue of PC World has an article on peoples expierences with equiptment and support. It may influence your decision. I have Gateways, but they are a few years older and have had pretty good luck.

Yep IBM , I'm going with past experience ... I have an older one here that still surprise me how good it is ... Also I like there update site for any parts / drivers and there tech support forum which many brand name computer companies don't have ...

But the best way to go about it would be to have someone build you a computer

Just take a look around this site. You will see about 30% of the posted problems are Dell owners.

If you want to check actual customer input on the computer companies, go to this site:
http://www.resellerratings.com/
This site not only covers the major PC vendors (e.g., Dell, Gateway ... check out the customer feedback for these sites!), but for thousands of Internet and mail-order vendors. Very helpful!
