Hello, i'm just asking for basically a poll. What do you think the best anti virus software is for a home PC?

That is cheap (Under $80 AU)
That doesn't bog down the system.
Protects from everything.

I spoke to someone and the recommended a program called avg or something? I'd never heard of it, i was just going to get norton again this year but i do know its crapp and bogs down the system so i'm looking for a change.

Thanks.

A lot of people use AVG FREE. You can get it at www.grisoft.com. It updates frequently and works well and it's FREE.

Keep Smiling
It makes them think you're up to something...

Nice choice grasshopper...

There is a few av programs out there. It's up to you to choose what is more comfortable for you to use.

Reccommended programs can be found @ http://www.akapc.com/links

I do reccommend that even if you have as little as dialup, you need a good AV program and Firewall, cause hackers know that ppl with dialup don't need it and spyware love to slow your connection even more.

Hey, thanks for the quick replies. I'm downloading AVG right now (stupid dial up) and do you recommend zone alarm as a fire wall?

Also with those two programs can you use them forever? Like are the updates unlimited and free?

Thanks.

From my experience and from what I have read, 'Trend' is the best. But I'm cheap and use the free AVG (free updates).

So you recommend AVG Free and the program is completely free and unlimited updates?

What about zone alarm? Is that completely free because i just found something on a zone alarm page, i'm doing the zone alarm pre install search of my computer and on the page it has three versions of zone alarm that you can purchase.

Also i'm assuming that zone alarm and avg will use less system resources than norton?

Thanks.

Yes, in my experience with Norton and Symantec they are resource hogs cause they require many things to run in the background.

Prevention is the best medicine against malicious codes and scumware, and you ensure this, by always maintaining up-to-date definition files for your AV (free or paid).

I've been satisfied with KAV so far.

In my opinion, and I am no expert, as long as you have one that is good, meaning any of the ones listed above and more, you will be ok as long as you also take precautions. like being VERY careful with file sharing programs, don't go to porn sites, don't download things in emails from people you don't know etc. it also helps to have some good free anti-spyware programs like spyware blaster, spyware S&D and ad-aware...

I use AVG (free), Ad-aware, Spybot and Spyware Blaster.

The important thing to remember is that no protection software is perfect, so the other thing I do is go to sites such as Norton, Trend, etc where you can get a free scan, once a month, and check if they find anything that AVG might have missed.

Nothing so far! Fingers crossed.
