can someone elaborate on this...i have done it before, took all day and it was supposed to solve some issues which it didnt...whats the deal with defragging?

It cleans up your hard drive. Because when you save something on it, it just writes to it putting it any where it can. When you degrag, imagine cleaning up a very messy room where everything is neatly organized...

if done regularly (once a month minimum) it speeds up data access. Basically data is stored in chunks on your hard drive. These chunks are like mini filing cabinets. When you install a program the program fills in the spaces in these filing cabinets often sharing them with other data. Defragmenting sorts the filing cabinets so that the same data is in each one and not spread accross many. Thats it put simply using metaphors.
This means data can be more easily accessed. Defragmenting won't take as long if you do it more often. It only took that long becuase you probably havent done it for a very long time.
The main benefits are the programs should launch quicker and they won't suffer from stuttering caused my hard drive activity which can sometimes happen. You may also notice faster boot/shutdown times.
Hope that helps.

the whole point in defragging is it make it so your computer can access ane read files faster (thats a simplified version)
i usually defrag my computer every week or every second week,
the more you do it the less toime it will take to defrag..it usually takes me about 10-15 mins to defrag,
best of luck,

hey thanks ppl, i have a question...i just formatted a week ago (i was hit with the viruses) and i have installed some programs etc..havent done too much...how long would it take to defrag? 10-15 mins? if so, that would be good..let me know whats up..and why is the XP defrager no good? as opposed to the other one on the net?
HUGH

i spend a lot of time on my computer and well basicly i defrag it every day..
it only takes about 10mins..

You'll find your first defrag will take some time. No way around it.
After the first, just run once or twice a week and you'll see it takes little time to defrag on an ongoing basis.

Defragging takes me about 2 mins at most, but I use Diskeeper and defrag about once every two days manually. I also have a fairly powerfull processor.
