try double clicking speaker icon next to clock,
then click options-click properties-under show the following volume controls-put a checkmark next to pc speaker, click ok, then put a checkmark in mute under pc speaker.

I usually unplug the internal speaker in the base unit.
It won't stop the machine working.

Any opinions?

jerzo, Go into your Control Panel and open the Sounds & Audio Devices and under the "Sounds" tab try the various sound schemes which have a speaker aside of them till you find the sound you're hearing by hiliting them one at a time then click the small right arrow button which will play the sound and when you find the right ones use the downward arrow button and choose "None".
