Battery Problem

I have an Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. THe battery charging light flashes between red and green so the battery doesnt charge. The charger is fine, infact new. Does the flashing indicate the battery is no longer charging, I don't want to buy a new battery if this isnt the problem. I have also removed battery and cleaned terminals etc .

Nope, its 4-5yrs old, also works fine with battery out and on mains power
