Hey,

My friend brought me his mother's computer to fix. It wouldn't boot, so I did a CHKDSK /R from the Recovery Console. It said that it was doing additional recovery and repairs, and took about an hour to run. When it finished, Windows was able to boot successfully! However, I did another chkdsk check, and it reported that her HD had 272 KB of bad sectors. What should I do? Is it safe to clean? Do I run chkdsk /r again? Or is her HD a goner? Advice, please!

Thanks.

-Andrew

With this drive always have a backup of the important stuff .

If new bad sectors start to arise, you should replace the hard disk, since its magnetic media is not ok.

272KB isn't an extreme amount. But I agree with JohnW, I wouldn't put any valuable information on that drive without a backup of it.
I suggest running chkdsk occasionally. If any more bad sectors show up, dump it immediately.

I downloaded WDC (Western Digital)'s HD examination tool, and right off the bat, it reported a bad SMART read rate. I guess that's the answer - the HD is a goner. I'll have my friend's mom call HP and have it replaced... unless any of you have other ideas?

As it's still under warranty , that's the way to go .
