The question of how to backup and restore the registry apart from using the Restore feature has been asked by several people. Those who ran Win9X may well have used Configuaration Lifeguard or QRecover both of which will save the registry and the other configuration files and restore them from DOS even when the Safe Mode will not work. There is a similar freeware program for XP called ERUNT - The Emergency Recovery Utility NT which can be found at http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt.

It saves the files to a folder of your choice so it is easy to create as many backups as you wish by naming the folders accoring to, say, the date.

Restoration using a DOS boot disk is easy.

Well worth a try.

Just thought that I'd add that you won't be able to restore the backed up registry from DOS if your file system is NTFS.
