I backed up several files on Win 98 using the backup utility provided (.qic) I just bought a computer in Mexico which has Win XP installed on it and it doesn't have any programs which can read the .qic format. A search on the web for a download of .qic software for Win XP has so far not been successful. Can anybody help?

microsoft are so stupid. They didn't expect anyone to use their backup prog, so they didn't try to make it compatible... [what can you expect from MS].
Anyway what've done is connecting another comp with win98 to the new one (ethernet) to open the old qic format.
