I had installed winxp and linux(fedora)...
When booting a boot screen is displayed by fedora for selecting linux/windows. after some time i formatted c: and installed xp... now i wont get the fedora boot screen... so i thought if i could backup the masterboot record then i can restore after installing xp so i will get the dual bootup screen displaying windows/linux...

what am i supposed to do?

jayapalchandran, if you did indeed FORMAT, you wiped the drive clean and it's gone. Depending on the type format used, it MIGHT still be recoverable by a pro, but it's gonna be neither cheap nor easy.

You are asking this question in the wrong forum. It should be in the Linux Forum for a better chance of being answered by more people.

Anyway one of the various options in this collection of Saikee's grub booting tips should help you resolve your problem.

You may need to create a grub boot floppy or use your linux CD or any live linux CD.

Your linux partition will still be intact, but the reinstall of XP rewrote the boot sector. As advised above, a reinstall of Grub/Lilo should fix it.
