I need to backup my files every once in a while. I used to do it with Genie back up manager which does the job with no complications. But now I have quite a few backup volumes (on CD) & I'm starting to get confused. Hence I need a cataloguing software to make catalogues of my backups to know what is where.
Is there a backup software out there which does this?
I can also create these catalogues myself by creating lists of files (they have to be searchable); does anybody know any software to make a list of names & properties of the files in a specific folder?Your Help is appreciated
Positron

Hi,
I was actually wondering the same thing with another question I' like to tag onto Positron's question. I am considering getting a CD-RW DVD for this purpose in mind, since they hold several gigs. Does anyone know what the maximum gig a DVD can hold? Also, any sugegstions as to which drives should be considered and which ones to stay away from? And finally, I am using Nero 6 which seems to work fine. I'd be curious to know if anyone also uses Nero for backing up?
Positron, are you backing up to a DVD or a CD?
Thanks,
Veets

Positron, NTBackup, included with XP, will creates it's own catalog automatically. If you have XP Home you will need to install it as it is not installed by default. It is located on the XP Setup CD. Do a google search for more info.
Veets, a single layer DVD holds ~4.38 GB of data, a dual-layer almost twice that. But, dual layer media is still very expensive (about $15 each) whereas single layer media can be had for less than $1 a piece (even down to $.25) when bought in spindles of 50 or more. Plextors are some of the finest drives there are, but you will pay extra for them. Nero works great for burning any type of DVD.

Do some research before buying a Plextor DVD writer... they've had their fair share of problems.
"if it ain't broke, upgrade anyway."

Heres a sweet free program that will get the job done,

When all is said and done, I hope the girls can say they had fun..

Hi folks,
Thanks for the info! Now I know what single layer and double layer means and also what it translates to media cost!
