I reformat my computer often, but when I get done, I have to reset all my settings. This can be a laborious task, especially when you have your computer's internet connection optimized. I was wondering if and how I could use a program to save all my settings, put the save file on my external HDD, and when I reformat, set all my settings again with the file. Any ideas?

The thing is, I would like to format the computer, THEN restore my settings. CAN you do that with the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard?

When you run the wizard, save the file locally, burn it to CD/DVD.

I don't know if it will suit your requirements. But using an imaging program like Ghost or Acronis works very well for saving and restoring your entire system with all it's tweaks.

How often do you format, and why?

Repair installs and registry apps cleanup like ccleaner and regscrubxp. Malaware removal programs like spybot search and destroy, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and a good antivirus program should keep computer running well. I have never done a reinstall as I am still working from a well working computer running xp since Jan. 2007. A reformat and reinstall should always be the last resort to turn to. After all your not learning anything in what is causing a problem in the first place. After all computing.net was created for solutions to ones problems.

I reformat my computer about every four to six months because I like that "new OS smell" feel. It also usually gives me something to do. Also, I like to repartition my harddrive sometimes because I need some more space for my files/programs. I am too cheap to buy a third harddrive or partitioning software (Second HDD is used for backup after my other one crashed) to put my files on because I like to use older but still useable hardware. The main reason is just because I like to do that. It just gives me something to do. I do use some of the recomendations on this site to keep my computer going as long as possible but I like to reformat it. It is basically my hobby.

I think that I will go for the most cost effective way and just use the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard. Thanks!
