I accidentally installed a really annoying program/toolbar called AZESEARCH. I ran ad-aware many times but it just won't go away. It said something about my computer needing Active Control X or something like that so I installed it. And then this thing took over my computer completely. Please let me know what to do. Should I just reformat the harddrive? This problem just won't seem to go away. Please let me know. Thank you.

I had a bit of work but it worked:

Go to "My Computer"
Do a Search of AZE*.*
Close the AZESEARCH bar
Delete all the files one by one. if there is one that dont want to be deleted, leave it we will delete it later
Go to "Start" "Run" type regedit.
Go to Edit, Search, type AZE and search for all components that are related with the file and erase it (if you are note sure live it.) do this search until you are sure that you erased all the links.
Do another search on My computer and delete the File or files that last.
It's a lot of work..... but i works.

I got trapped by those vermin yesterday, after clicking what I thought was a legitimate link, but now being trapped by some XXX web site that insisted I MUST install their software. I kept clicking NO but could not close the browser window before it insisted again. Finally, after at least 20 times of saying NO it must have gone ahead and installed itself anyway. This is what I do to do to get rid of this scum:

1) Kill their running processes using ctrl/alt/del to "end task"

2) run MSconfig and go to the "start" tab and uncheck their software from loading at start-up.

3) Ran 3 spyware removal programs, all available from PCWorld (Ad-aware, Spybot, and BHO Demon).

4) Reboot and run all three spyware removal programs again, multiple times.

5) Used the windows "search" function to search for files beginning with "aze" and deleting the offending files

6) removed all XXX links that they installed on my favorites toolbar

7) deleted the "hosts" file from the Windows folder that redirected my IE browser to fake Google and Yahoo sites.

8) removed other XXX icons it planted in the windows folder

9) Cleaned the registry using Norton Windoctor

10) reinstalled the real Google toolbar

11) traced the IP addresses of the fake web sites listed in the "hosts" file and filed a complaint with the company hosting those IP addresses. They emailed me back saying they have blocked those IP addresses and I can no longer access these fake web sites

12) filed a complaint with the FTC against AZEsearch

I don't know if the issue is solved yet... just incase if it is not... I suggest doing the following.... (Worked for me)
1. I removed all AzerSearch entries using HijackThis
2. Downloaded SpySubtract and Bingo!! SpySubtract detected 20 entries of AzeSearch! It deleted all and phew... my PC was clean again!

Hope it works for you...
Hey Owen... dude, you really complain about this stupid Bar :@

Cheers

After all that i did..,
finally i found the best solution for this annoying problem !!!

Just doing 2 things and it's very easy to do :

1. Use HijackThis (You can download it at http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/HijackThis.exe) and
FixChecked on 3 object (or whatever they named) content "azesearch" text.
2. Run Norton WinDoctor to cleanup the invalid registry keys

And VOILA !!!
