I have McAfee's Internet Suite and Webroot's Spy Sweeper on my computer. Both coming up for renewal soon. One is $39.95 and the other $19.95.

Looking for cheaper or at best freeware as replacements. Both of the above work great but if I can save a buck I'd like to.

My wife and I use the computer for e-mail, banking, purchasing 'stuff', researching, etc. I still work with some Excel spreadsheets, she uses Word quite a bit. Of course lots of photos sent here and there of the grandkids. That's the extent of it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...Ron

I had McAfee's Internet Suite, but after the year, I removed it because it was causing my computer to slow down drastically. If you do remove it, make sure you use their removal tool from their website. I now use zone alarm firewall (free) and AVG anti-virus (also free)and they work great and I don't seem to have any problems. I also use Ad-aware, A squared, spyware blaster, along with CCleaner. These are all free and can be found at most download sites like Major Geeks or PC World.

I use AVG Free Edition as my antivirus and Windows Defender free from Microsoft for the spyware/malware.

Maybe it's because I'm cute; but...

I run Windows XP as the "users" account type, rather than Administrator and have never had a single virus/spyware problem. I run no "security" software, except Windows Firewall which is turned on by default.

This is how Linux comes as "default", and their users will swear blind they have the most secure computer system on the planet based purely on running the computer not as an administrator; so there must be some benefit in this approach?

Right click "run as admin" is needed to install applications; a minor hassle compared to running several spyware/virus programs, and the updates, scans, etc...

Unix systems are as susceptible to hostile software attacks as any other system, however, the Unix community is zealous in their believe that they are immune. This belief is in the face of reality!

Don't get what Abnormal linked you to. I tried it and it slowed my system to a crawl.

I've never had a problem with BOClean slowing my system or connection down. It's a great product that everyone without a lot of internet know-how should have running alongside their antivirus and firewall.
