Hello. Last night I installed several different programs trying to convert an mpeg file to an avi. I later uninstalled the programs, and now I can no longer play avi files in Windows Media Player or Winamp. However, they play just fine in DivX Player...The only avi I've sucessfully opened in these programs is the one I converted using one of the programs I downloaded.
I've gone through and reinstalled my DivX and XVid codecs, but still nothing. In WMP, the first frame of the video loads on the screen, but nothing plays. In Winamp, the display window (where the bars go up and down to indicate volume) shows a curve going horizontally back and forth, but nothing loads.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I've uninstalled the new programs; reinstalled my old codecs; I haven't yet tried a system restore (that's my next step when I get home from work), but I was hoping someone might have some ideas in case that doesn't help. Thanks!

system restore looks like about the only solution that I can see...sorry
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Well, I tried to restore...and I have no restore points! Interesting, but ok.
I rebooted in safe mode, under the Admin settings, and the files play in WMP without a problem. SO, I'm officially out of ideas. Anyone else? :(
