avi file crashes WMP 9.0

so here's the deal..just recently i tried playing an .avi file on WMP..and i got the "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close." error with the "send error report" and "dont send error report" buttons.
i tried playing another .avi file that had previously worked but that too gave me the same error.
both avi files dont work on IE or POWERDVD..can anyone help me fix this problem? ty in advance
