AVI and MPEG

Hi, All, I installed YouTube downloader and downloaded a few music clips using the MPEG compression. The audio and video quality was poor, but acceptable for me. I tried again using the AVI option and the results were noticeably improved. I had to install the Xvid codec to enable WMP to play them, though. I was agreeably surprised to find that the AVI files were no larger than the MPEG ones. Why is this? I have always understood that AVI files, being uncompressed, are huge compared to MPEG. Will someone please enlighten me?

The avi tag is just a container for compressed xvid or dixv files.
Micro$oft have a a version of avi which is uncompressed and is next to useless storage wise.

Hi, soupnasty,
Thanks for that. This explains why the file size doesn't differ. Does this mean that the YouTube AVI clips I download are in the original form uploaded, whereas the MPEG would be compressing them again? Would this explain the AVI quality improvement?
