Hi:

The AVG Free Edition 7.0.269 Antivirus program which is installed on my Pc seems now to be unable to connect properly when it is downloading its Updates. (I am connected to the internet when this problem occurs).

I have tried hard to find out if my settings are incorrect, but cannot find anything obvious.

The little chequered square on my taskbar is always now grey and not the usual green coloured square. So when linking to AVG's Updates, it states that this has been ***unsuccessful*** while at the same time says my PC will have to be restarted for updates to take effect.

I need to sort this out, otherwise I will become vunerable for viruses, does anyone at this forum use AVG and have a clue what this problem could be and can it be resolved.

Thanks in advance of assistance.

I used to have that problem with AVG 6.0 and that's why I switched to Avast! 4 home edition and I have never looked back. Great free on-line up-dates as you surf the net.

Now for your problem. It might be your firewall settings. If you were using Sygate Personal Firewall then here's the settings you would use

For the Sygate Home GHP
Set “Generic Host Process for Win32 Services” (svchost.exe) in the running applications window to allow.

Right click on Sygate in the system tray go to applications… > right click on “Generic Host Process for Win32 Services” (svchost.exe) go to advanced… > uncheck “Act as Server” then ok.

Hope that enlightens you a bit. Good Luck

AVG is having server problems. Checking for updates and then downloading them is at times impossible.

Hi: Thanks for your speedy reply. I may switch to Avast 4 Home edition as you recommend.

Actually my firewall is McAlfee so I shall have to re-think your advice.

Here goes............

I agree there seems to be a server problem that AVG is having as I believe AVG have now changed their server because of the high load of subscribers to their Free Antivirus program.

So that you know, I've installed AVG on my friend's PC this morning and updated the virus signature to version 7.0.300 with no problem.

That's one thing you don't have to worry about with avast! It up-dates automaticly as you surf the net, you don't have to set an up-date time.

I have AVG Pro. It costs a few pounds a year, updates at 02.00 every day and scans at 02.30 every day. I ran AVG free edition for many years but decided to go for Pro when I got DSL, haven't looked back since. Well worth the few pounds (UK) it costs.
