Today's the final day AVG will support 7.5 antivirus; been getting the "nag" screens to upgrade to 8.0.

Question: Has anyone encountered any problems after installing the upgrade?

I've been using AVG (free) antivirus for years in its various incarnations and never had an issue.

But before upgrading to a new version, I always check with Computing.net members :)

Thanks

No problem here.
I think we would have seen plenty of complaints if there were any problems.

I've seen no problems with it on a half dozen computers I've installed it on, but be aware it uses more resources and is a bit more of a load on your computer than 7.5, and it includes anti-spyware stuff that is enabled by default - don't use anti-spyware software that has one or more modules that run resident, that is, all the time, at the same time as that is enabled (AdAware 2008 free gets along with it - it doesn't run resident). It also pops up frequent windows about tracking cookies - you may want to turn that feature off.

Thanks for your informative reply.

You wrote about "anti-spyware stuff that is enabled by default."

I appreciate that caveat. I've never liked protective "suites." I run a separate firewall, antispyware programs, rootkit tracers, and other malware utilities which have served me well.

I take a multi-layered approach. I don't believe that any one software distributor can cover all those bases with a "suite" of anti-malware programs.

Regarding AVG 8.0, sounds like I should probably pay the nominal sharware fee and go back to NOD 32 (Eset). They too are marketing a suite, but their basic antivirus utility is still available by itself, with no add-ons.

When I ran Eset's antivirus utility a few years ago (free trial), I never had a problem with interference with my other utilities. Perhaps I should have stayed with them and paid the yearly fee.

To be fair, AVG (free) antivirus has saved my bacon any number of times (and I'm not a deliberately risky Net surfer).

Thanks for your input to my initial post. :)

I've read several Forum threads recently concerning System slowdown involving AVG 8.0. Seems it's acquiring a Bloat Ware reputation.

Read a couple today, either on Annoyances, org or here on Cnet. As I recall, Zone Alarm was also involved in at least some of the issues.

I've been running AvastAV FREE for some time now with no real complaints.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

I for one am not happy with the new avg.

It is becoming a resource hog. You need to limit updates and scans to times you are not on the computer.... or be prepared to go get lunch.

Next...it is not compatible with Naughty Norton, McAfee, Avast or a nuber of other anti virus, spy programs.

Lastly...I do volunteer work rebuilding free computer for school kids......and AVG seems to create a problem when connecting to $MS to validate a ..new build???.

Tired of talking to them on the phone so I install AVG after system is up and running 100%.

I haven't looked to deeply as to why, as turning off AVG and using hp oem and dell oem xp disk and mar's licenses provided by $ms seem to be the ticket.

AVG is trying to fix something that isn't broken....

I have a test/toy computer that runs faster with spyware a keylogger and a nasty torgen on it that a clean computer that has AVG on it trying to do it's minute to minute update and scan. (puters are same)

Norton ...even with the uninstall provided on the web is a nightmare to get off your system.....

Hey ther you go AVG....make it un-installabele with a fat $$$ price tag.

Well just my thoughts.

I appreciate you relating your experience regarding AVG 8.0.

As Dumbob posted above, the AVG upgrade is acquiring a reputation as bloatware. I won't install anything on my box that wastes CPU or RAM resources. My Pentium 4 is perfectly adequate to my needs. But even if I was running the full 2048MBs of RAM of which my PC is capable of accepting (rather than 512MBs), I still wouldn't install AVG in its current incarnation.

At the moment, it looks like either a free edition of Avast (as suggested by jam and Dumbob), or paying for a shareware version of NOD32. The annual license fee works out to 11-cents a day. That's chump change for a superior antivirus program that gets along with other utilities on the box.

I had to laugh in full agreement when you wrote: "Norton ...even with the uninstall provided on the web is a nightmare to get off your system."

Been there, done that! I tried to remove Norton antivirus from a friend's PC a couple of years ago. After the uninstall, I had to spend an hour with a registry utility removing orphan entries which had been left behind by the Norton uninstall. Not dozens - hundreds! They were in parts of the registry hive where you wouldn't expect to ever find entries from an antivirus program.

It would have taken less time to reinstall the operating system from scratch!

Sincere thanks to everyone who responded to my initial post :)
