I would like to set my yahoo and msn messenger to scan everything before downloaded can someone tell me what I need to enter?? thanks!

Messenger programs are not antivirus programs. I'm not aware if even an antivirus program can scan things before they are downloaded. The best you can do is scan while downloading to prevent malicious stuff self installing and again the messenger programs don't do that. Get a good antivirus. AVG is ok if you use it already. Get Spybot Search & Destroy and use it's "Immunize" service. Get a good firewall such as Zonealarm. Then realize that if you download stuff on P2P filesharing that even these precautions won't guarantee your security. An antivirus scan of downloaded files only detects virus problems and may not detect other spyware/malware.

It's an option in my preferences of both messenger to scan with before download.

I wasn't asking if I could do it, I just re installed everything on my computer and I wanted to add that back but I do not ahve the correct thing to add. Can anyone please help?

Click tools then options in both messengers and browse the tabs at the top....think its called messages...there in the middle is "File transfer" click the "Scan for viruses using" box and then the browse button and point it to your AV programe.
