I cannot run my AVG antivirus software or MSconfig. Both of these open for a second and then close...no error message, they just close. I can get the AVG Icon to appear in the bottom corner by the clock as if it were running but when I mouse over it, it disappears. I can't run an AVG Scan either...it will start and then just close. Any help?

It sounds like your computer picked up a virus/trojan. Go to the link below and run the Free "HouseCall" online virus scan.

There was another post recently regarding this. Had something to do with an infected HOST file.

I think it must be an infected HOST file. I ran the scan from trenmicro and it came up empty (didn't find a thing). I also downloaded the free Zone Alarm firewall and since then I keep getting a message that a system32/svchost.exe is trying to access the internet as a server...is this normal? I also get a message that msconfig32.exe is trying to access the internet. Should these be trying to access the internet or are they infected with some sort of freaky virus? Thanks for the help

Oh, one more thing. Since I've added the firewall my virus software and msconfig are running great. Should I still be concerned about something or did the firewall cure the problem?

No, that is not normal. Go google and get AD-AWARE,SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY,SWATIT, and SPYWAREBLASTER..Update and run them. If that fails, search for host and in C:windows and c:windows/system32/drivers/etc. - open, edit-select all-delete. Windows will recreate the files.

Did all that. Scans came up empty. Deleted the files. Firewall still says that msconfig.exe is trying to access the internet and svchost.exe (E:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe) is trying to act as a host. Also, when I block these from accessing the internet I can't log on either. Any more ideas, (short of throwing it out the window)

Sorry. File name is msconfig32.exe if that makes any difference?

Try start-run-msconfig- startup and uncheck anything that refers to msconfig. Reboot.

Okay, did that. When I uncheck it and try to restart it won't let me, the system stops responding and I have to physically turn it off. When I boot it back up neither Zone Alarm or my Virus software load, and to top it off when I check the startup option under msconfig, somehow another msconfig32.exe is checked. I have tried this three times, each time the same thing happens. In the startup list it has two msconfig32.exe's that are unchecked and a new one that is. Should I just search for these files and delete them myself?

I am having the exact same problem. I am not able to run AVG or MSCONFIG. It starts up and after a few seconds dies. Did you come up with a solution?

HERE'S HOW I FIXED THAT MSCONFIG PROBLEM:

Run msconfig in Safe Mode(it will run in safe mode),then in the Startup Tab, look for " augmsg.exe " and Uncheck it to stop it from running. Somehow, it fools around with msconfig.

Btw,anyone knows what augmsg.exe is? Trojan?

Ok. Here's another Fix {better than my earlier post)

AVG works but msconfig will not run. To fix the msconfig problem:

1) Run in Safe Mode

2) Open My Computer\Tools\Folder Options\
View\ then under Hidden Files and Folders,
select "Show Hidden Files and Folders"

3) Go To C:\WINDOWS\system32, find and
delete "augmsg.exe"

4) Done!
