I tried to install AVG on my computer and during the install process I got the following error message. Thus, it won't install. I cannot find anything about this error message on the grist site. Does anyone know what this means or how it can be fixed?

C\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and microsoft applications.Choose 'close' to terminate the application.

Thanks in advance.

i dont know how likely it is but there are a number of viruses out there which block installations of anti virus software.

visit TendMicro Housecall to run a scan of your computer.

If that doesn't shed any light, try system file checker. This scans your computer and attempts to repair or restore any corrupted files. To run this hit start, run and type 'sfc /scannow' (without the quotes).

Thanks. I've done the online virus scan and came up with nothing. I tried running sfc/scannow and I get another error that says windows cannot find sfc/scannow. Any other suggestions?

If you have a copy of autoexec.nt in windows\repair, copy and paste it into windows\system32.

You may also want to run some adware/spyware scans as those programs are often blamed for the disappearing autoexec.

Hijinx, I did as instructed - copied the file, ran all Ad-Aware. I tried to reinstall AVG. it seemed to get a bit farther. but now I get a different error message as follows....

Cannot find the file
C:\Docume~\Carlabe\local settings\temp\WZS13.tmp\setup.exe or one of it's components.

More suggestions?

I'm not familiar with AVG, but you could try deleting everything that's in local settings/temp and then running the install again. You could also check the add/remove programs list. If the install got far enough along for it be listed in add/remove, uninstall before running the setup again.

Thanks for your help. I did get it to install. After doing a bit of googling I figured it out. It downloaded as an .exe, but I opened and extracted from Winzip and was able to get it to install that way. Good thing too because it found 4 virus's!
