My free version of AVG antivirus will no longer run automatic updates. I click "update now" and I get a message sayin AVG cannot establish an internet connection. I can go to their website and manually update my software but why does the auto update suddenly not work?

There's been a problem at their site for awhile now. It works sporadically.

Is it saying there is no internet connection?
If so you can go to C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6\url.ini and edit it from
[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
Actual URL=1
to
[SERVER_NAME]
1=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe
Actual URL=1
thats what worked for me. This was told to me by someone on this forum.

I had the same problem on several computers running the free version. In all cases I solved the problem by re-downloading the free version to those machines.

It appears there has been an update to the free version (like maybe after so long they want you to buy it) but everything's been fine for about a month.

Can anyone give me a link to the actual download file of either the updates or the installation program? for some reason I can't access the grisoft site (or ANY virus software site for that matter) When I try, I get a Microsoft XP page that says:

Your Web service is now running.
You do not currently have a default Web page established for your users. Any users attempting to connect to your Web site from another machine are currently receiving an Under Construction page. Your Web server lists the following files as possible default Web pages: default.htm,default.asp,index.htm,iisstart.asp. Currently, only iisstart.asp exists.

To add documents to your default Web site, save files in c:\inetpub\wwwroot\.

I think I may have something on my PC thats preventing me from getting to any antivirus site. This is driving me insane!

Any suggestions?

- Bill

I have updated the .ini file per response 2 and downloaded a new free version per response 5. If I manually try to do an update, it takes many, many trys to finally get through. Today, 3/31/04, I am getting a new message saying that the downloaded file is corrupted and will be deleted.

This has been an EXCELLENT program for several years. I hope this is not their way of seriously discouraging use of the free version.
