Does anyone know how to get autoplay to work for srorage devices? Works fine with DVD, Burner & Zip. I think I have been to every forum and tried every reg edit imaginable. Can this be fixed without a "dirty reinstall" of XP? Have checked autoplay properties, shell detection service, used Microsoft Auto Fix..Frustrating!

Believe it or not, I found that sight this morning. It is a little over my head on some of the reg entries, as I am not sure what class/name to give my devices in the registry..Fugi Fine Pix and RCA RD 1080 MP3 player. Any idea how to fix this manually, or as some say, autoplay doesn't work with some devices. Thanks for the reply. Any help you can give would really be appreciated.

Jeff,

I'm not familiar with "Fugi Fine Pix and RCA RD 1080 MP3 player" Is that a single device that incorporates pictures/video with sound or 2 seperate devices?

Try this... After you attach your device, find it in windows explorer, right click, go to properties, and select events. From here you should be able to select an event and an action to be performed.

I must say this is a good question that's raised a question of my own. When I did the aforementioned for my digital camera (which autoplay already works for) I found multiple entries for the same programs to be opened.

Now you've got me interested... and looking.

Keep me posted and I'll do the same.

Anyone else with info on this?...sure could use the help.

No, they are two separate devices. They work fine and download fine. There is a Microsoft kb article, #822660, that says this is a known issue and that SP2 will fix it. They provide a "fix" called "Auto Fix." I have used it and all it does is keep switching the reg entries under HKey CU>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Policies>Explorer>No Drive Type Auto Run, from a 91 (hex) to a 90 which is exactly the opposite as another Microsoft kb article said if you manually adjust it (90 to 91). I am totally perplexed. Wonder if it was another MS "Security Update" that did this. Thanks again for any help.

One other interesting thing. The "Scanners and Camera Wizard" has vanished from "Accessories." Reinstalling the components did no good.

Jeff,

Go to Windows/System32 and find wiaacmgr.exe Then drag it to your start menu and continue dragging it to accessories (or to your quicklaunch bar...or wherever you want). It wont move it...it'll just create a shortcut for it. Then rename the shortcut to "scanner wizard" or whatever you want.

That was an easy one!

Oh yeah...make sure you have "show hidden files and folders" checked in tools/folder options/view in explorer. Just to be sure.

Thianks for the scanner tip. I just can't understand how it got deleted in the first place. Any ideas on the autoplay? At this point, if I could just get the contents of the folder to show when I plug the device in I'd be happy. Any ideas how to do that? I don't see that option in my folders tools.

Thanks again for your help!

Jeff,

when you attach your device...doesn't it show up in explorer automatically?

If it doesn't..maybe you have a "usb" problem

It is recognized by the hardware wizard and the drive is there under My Computer and works fine. It just does not open an explorer window. It looks like it is trying and then (little blip) and then just goes right over it. Do you know how to fix that? If it were a USB problem, I don't think it would work right. Plus I tested the devices on other USB's that do autoplay and nothing happened. It is only on removable storage drive. I am wondering if somehow I set some sort of preference somewhere. I even did a "dirty reinstall" yesterday and that did not correct it. I do have a reg backup form about 4 months ago. However, everytime I try to put it back in it says cannot enter the whole reg as some keys and processes are in use. I know, pretty dangerous, but I have Norton Go-Back which works much, much, much better than System Restore. Any idea how to get the Explorer window to come up?

I get the normal tab of properties with auto run there. This is so strange.

Jeff,

(sorry, I was away for a few days)

Which device and what's showing in the "normal tab of properties"

My digital camera obviously has different "shell extentions" than...say...my external hard drive...or my scanner.

What do yours say for each device?

SullyD

(I'm interested in the outcome of this)

The device is drive H. The tabs say..General, Autoplay, Hardware, Sharing.

I am wondering if Tweak UI has something to do with this. When I plug the device in, it "blips" like it is trying to bring up the explorer window. Again, the devices work fine and the hardware is recognized as I get the "plug-in" sound when I plug the device in. Is there a setting in folders under explorer for this? I also downloaded "X Setup" which is a pretty cool Tweak Tool, thinking the settings it produced may override Tweak UI. I wonder if there is an "UnTweakUI" program or if that is the actual problem. It wants to autostart, but it seems something is overriding it. Thanks again for your help.

PS- I went to "kelly's korner" on the web. Under windows A-Z, I downloaded and ran every reg edit there pertaining to autoplay. There is a pretty extensive area on autoplay.
