autoplay dialog box Odd behaviour after inserting USB stick

Anyone have any idea what might be causing the following behaviour that started recently on my XP PC please?

I insert a memory stick (any of several that I use frequently) and when the menu of actions appears I click the usual 'Open to view files'. The drive's contents appears. So far so good. But then within about 10 seconds it disappears! Even if I've done nothing but look at it.

I then have to open it again via My Computer, after which it stays as long as I want.

It wouldn't seem to be a hardware problem with either the stick or the port. Likely then it's something within windows, maybe a registry setting, that's been altered. I can't think of a specific fix for it so you may just want to try a system restore choosing a date from just before the problem started.

Another possibility is to go to Control Panel > AutoPlay > Removable devices. Tell it to do something other than 'Open to view files' and Save settings, Then go back and switch it to 'Open to view files' again. I know it sounds crazy but sometimes Windows can suddenly need to be told things twice.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Thanks both. I don't have an AutoPlay entry in CP here. I did try instead to follow your idea quickly when the initial menu appeared, but after changing the option arbitrarily and then changing back as suggested, it made no difference.

Will consider the SR suggestion next, although I need to first check for recent changes I've made that I don't want to lose.

Or just live with it...
