APIPA means you are NOT talking with a DHCP server. so i would say a faulty router. try running a static address and see if the problem solves itself.
good luck

Nick, sounds like you need to check your router settings. Make sure the static DNS in your router settings are correct. This should be the DNS of your cable or DSL provider. Also, increase your Client Lease Time in your router settings. Default is (0) equal to 1 day. Increase it to 9999 the maximun. This should fix your problem.

Sincerely,

Mr. Cheeks

ok guys messed with the settings on the router and changed it to a static IP address and it worked for a while then went back to automatic private address. changed it back to a dynamic ip and its working ok again....from past experiences it will probably change back to auto private address again....any advice on that? thanks again!

I am having the same problem. It is related to XP using a Network Bridge in my case. The Network Bridge I have learned was installed by XP because I have a firewire card and it links my firewire to the network. It seems there is no particular reason when my switches to Automatic Private Address. To fix it, I have to go to Network setting and remove all connections attached to the bridge then reconnect them. The bridge then recognizes the IP address as invalid and obtains a new one through DHCP. I wish I could figure out why it is happening.
