I turned my PC on this morning and before a desktop was displayed, I heard the log off sound and I was presented with the Windows XP User list. I clicked my name to try and log on again, it said logging on.. and all the other stuff, then I again heard the log off sound and I was taken back to the main screen.
I tried ctrl+alt+deleting to the administrator log on window, but if I try to log on as Administrator it says it cannot log on due to an account restriction. Also, exactly the same happens if I try to boot in safe mode.
I tried running a scan of the computer through my network, but it only scanned the shared files and folders - it didn't detect anything.
It certainly looks like the activities of a virus as I keep mentioning, but I cant find any viruses that are known to have these symptoms.
My copy of Windows XP is completely legit, there should be no need for cracks by the way, and I have not used any cracks on it.
After doing some minor research on the topic, it would seem it could be related to an issue with the computer clock. How do I change this if I cant get into windows? (Safe mode doesn't work either).

boot with xp disk.
all the way to the screen thats lists the c: drive and its attributes.
press 'r' on that page.
windows will remove system files, rebuild those files, and repair registry all without data loss.

My Computer is a stockbuilt eMachine, and I do not think it comes with a XP Disk on it's own.
I'll take a look through the stuff that came with it but I'm not sure if it just contains eMachines own master reboot CD's.

I just checked the CD's, they're reboot CD's provided by emachines and when I boot from them the only option is to format the drive and reinstall windows, which is not what i want to do.
Therefore I cannot try your solution.
Is there are other way I can go about fixing this problem.

Do you think this could be the case, if so how would I know?
In fact, I doubt very much this is the case considering I paid a lot of money for the computer and assumed as with all stockbuilt comps. it came with a full version of the software. Although I think it would fit in with 90 days of owning the computer.

I've never seen an Emachine, but you normally (if you haven't activated) you get a baloon that pops up reminding you. Also, I `think' there is an Activate option in the Start menu.
Activation can either be done online or by calling Microsoft.

"I wonder if you were sold a system with an illegal install of WinXP."
Perhaps so IF it was purchased from any place other than chain stores and reputable business.
Let's not demean the eMachine for the mere reason that it attracted so many people due to basement-bargain prices.
For all who want to know, the eMachine is designed to be thrown away when it is time to upgrade the hardware.

I agree with ham30. If you have not activated Windows XP within 30 days, your copy becomes illegal, theoretically speaking. When this happens, the only recourse you have is to call Microsoft and explain your situation.

I certainly was not attempting to demean Emachines.
I thought it was `possibly' a second hand machine that woodbexhill had purchased.

ham30.
You really weren't demeaning eMachines. I just didn't want people to get the wrong impression of these machines. They are OK (but not the best) if money is your stumble block.

Well this has severely come off topic.
I'm considering putting the hardisk of the emachine in this computer, copying over important files, and then reformating the emachine though it really is a lot of hastle.
Can anyone think of a better way to salvage my files?
Of course if anyone has any additional info. on fixing this automatic log off problem it'd be appreciated.

I found the solution to this problem here:
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=29752Did you run Adaware before you shut down windows? That is what has been causing this problem for many people and me.
Now my computer works fine.
