Comment:

For those concerned about autoexec.bat, win.ini. and config.sys. They are not part of XP. They are part of the DOS system which does not reside on XP. You can delete them if you want to.

The only thing a clean-installed Windows XP will include are config.nt, autoexec.nt and win.ini, boot.ini.

THE ABOVE FILES SHOULD NOT BE DELETED.

Windows XP uses config.nt and autoexec.nt in conjunction with running DOS application.

I don't have any of these files except the BOOT.INI on my machines. BOOT.INI is required. Maybe these are required by Dell, Compaq,Etc?

have you tried searching for config.nt and autoexec.nt in your system?

I have both in the directories
c:\windows\i386
c:\windows\repair
c:\windows\system32.

Config.nt and autoexec.nt are there, as you said. But autoexec.bat and config.sys are not part of XP or NT. They are not required for boot in the msconfig menu. Autoexec.nt is a file for creative soundblaster. Config.nt is the file for CMD.COM.

Welll - revisit the other thread once again. I'm sure you'd get my cue.

As for config.nt and autoexec.nt, MSKB 314106 does not say anything about being a file for cdm.com and creative soundblaster, respectively. I don't even have creative soundblaster (dont need it)

revisited 107389. I deselect win.ini every time I go to msconfig with no adverse consequences. It just keeps reselecting itself even though I don't have a win.ini on root C:

I have not used the win.ini file since I installed XP 1.5 years ago. I have pro corp. multi-license thanks to my son-in-law. Legal. Have never had a problem that I didn't create except for a few minor glitches. I deleted autoexec.bat, config.sys and win.ini months ago. Win.ini keeps showimg up in MSCONFIG and I keep telling it to go away. No problem.
