Having same trouble. AutoCAD website says officially you must run XP Professional, but I have read accounts from others that they were able to get it to install on XP Home. Interested to know if you get it working.

O AutoCAD 2000 tem rodado sem problemas nas máquinas com XP profissional. Se o seu é o Home, então isso é indício de que talvez haja alguma incompatibilidade entre eles. Você está usando qual versão do XP?

the solution is more simple that we can imagine....
if this situation happens to you, just right
click on the installation file (setup.exe)and on the compatibility panel, choose to be
compatible whith win98.... and voilá!!
------------
a solução é muito simples... apenas cliquem
com a tecla direita do rato no fich. de instalação (setup.exe), e na opção de conpatibilidades, escolham para ser compativel com o windows 98..

THE 'WRONG OPERATING SYSTEM ERROR' CAN BE ELIMINATED BY DOING THE FOLLOWING:

-INSERT AUTOCAD CD IN YOUR DRIVE
-CLICK RUN AND BROWSE THE CD
-LOCATE SETUP.exe AND RIGHT CLICK ON IT.
-SELECT COMPATABILITY TAB AND CHOOSE WINDOWS
2000 AND CLICK OK
-DOULBE CLICK SETUP.exe AND AUTOCAD 2000
SHOULD BEGIN TO INSTALL.

The "right click" thing seems to work just fine.
Many thanks
