I'm assuming your motherboard has no onboard sound since you have an "off brand, asian" sound card.

Shut down your PC, pull the card and look for a brand and/or model number. You need to identify the sound card. Post your findings here and we can help you find the proper driver.

if you want to identify your hardware, and software for that matter, you could go to www.belarc.com. Click "Free Download" then "download" and install the "advisor.exe". Its free and it will give you a snapshot of what hardware you have and what software is installed including serial numbers. Once you determine which sound card you have i would remove old drivers and get new ones from http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/

my motherboard is an Asus P4GE-V
which DOES have a soundcard inside it or something like that. i downloaded the driver, tried to install it, but it says the soundcard isn't connected. which is impossible.

make sure your integrated sound is enabled in BIOS. If its enabled then you might have a bad sound chip and you will have to opt for a pci sound card.

im not going to update my motherboar'ds bios, however when i went to device manager, and under the audio driver, it said that the CMI soundcard that i had was being used, however the driver was wrong or something like that. it asked me to reinstall it, despite having to do that countless times. is there a way to let the audio setup reconize the motherboard's audio driver/presence?

next time your in device manager delete any sound drivers you find. I would even go to add/delete programs and make sure nothing is in there regarding sound. if so delete it. Reboot and go into bios. look for default settings and check that...the bios should automatically know it needs to enable the onboard sound device. when your system reboots windows will find the hardware and look for the drivers...thats when you can point to the correct drivers

im looking at your Manual..Lets try getting the onboard audio working. Delete your sound drivers and turn off your computer. Remove your asian sound card and plug your speakers into the motherboards Line Out(light green - middle) audio jack directly. Make sure your speakers are turned on. Some of these same mobo's came with and some without audio chips. If you dont have the light green jack then your Mobo is one without onboard audio. If you do have the jack then boot and press delete to enter your bios. Click the Advanced tab then scroll and click the I/O Device configuration. your Onboard AC97 Audio Controller should be set to "Auto". When you boot to windows you should go to the Asus site and download the audio drivers for your board. here is the link http://support.asus.com/download/do... make sure you download the XP drivers. you might have to reboot after install. let me know what happens

i did everything you told me to, but i've ran into this problem before.

when i downloaed the driver from the site, it was just a bunch of files.

it downloads the SMAXWDM folder and inside, it has 2 subfolders, SE and W2k_XP.

They both have "install" applications but they don't work. nothing gets installed, no pop ups, no new windows, nothing.

am i supposed to extract these files somewhere?
