Comment:

Have just upgraded to XP Pro. Cannot play system sounds or audio CDs etc. Gone to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Volume: and it says No Audio Device.
Also Volume Control missing from system Tray and option to click to show it in system tray is greyed out.

HAve tried going to Start Menu>All Programmes> Accessories> Entertainment> Volume Control and this tells me that there are no Active Mixer Devices.

Have tried uninstalling and re-installing drives for the MPU-401 audio device, but this hasn't worked. Tried everthing in the help/troubleshooting guides but still no sound. Only have the onboard sound. Any Suggestions to fix this, or should I install a separate sound card?

What does it list in Device Manager for Audio Devices? If there's nothing showing, with no asterisks, then I'd guess you need to access you BIOS to enable the onboard sound. If the device is listed but has an asterisk against it then you need to install the correct drivers - either consult the documentation for your mobo or use something like AIDA/Everest to identify it.

If I take what you said literally, you did an upgrade to XP, and if so from what OS. Upgrades seldom work effectively and somewhere along the line, modems don't work, sound cards don't work and so on.
That said, have you tried the motherboard cd or downloading the newest driver from pc make or motherboard manufacturer. With soundcards, often you have to put the driver in, for the OS to find the soundcard...seems backwards but Sounblasters are like this.
