I have experienced this many times. It is usually during the "Copying files..." phase of an XP install. The problem is almost always RAM (XP is fussier than most OSes about RAM). If you can, try another stick that worked in another XP system. Otherwise, you may need to get a 128MB stick from a reputable vendor, like Crucial (I've always had good luck there) and try it out.

I had the same problem during a clean installation of Windows XP Home and it was because my two 512MB memory sticks weren't the same.

I tried using the old stick that came with the computer and tryed one both, even the roomates. Nothing has worked. Could the hard drive be the problem? Please help, i need my computer working again. (this is on a A21m IBM laptop) I have reinstalled the OP system a couple of times before but never had a problem. Thanks
