ATAPI & CD-ROM ERROR!!! HELP

In my eventviewer program i see a lot ATAPI errors and CD-Rom errors, and tha cd-rom drive spends all day reading the drive like if there was a cd inside, i cant burn cd's neither, i wanted tu restore my pc, with the Compaq CD Recovery but the problem is that i have like 10GB of personal files, and like a cant burn cds i dont know what to do to not lose my files and restore my OS, is there anyway to run the recovery cd and make it to do not erease a specified folder?, with out making another partition of the hd. Can the issue of the cd-rom problem and atapi, be caused by a driver problem, or because of the hardware

First try using a different physical CD drive and see if you just have a bad drive. Borrow a friend's or take it to a computer shop and do a quick test...
