After installing a new motherboard, my system would lock up when trying to boot into Windows XP. I booted from an Original Windows XP SP1 cd and tried to repair the installation using the upgrade installation option. However, the setup routine keeps giving me an error, File Missing. ASMS. Please insert the Windows XP Service Pack 1 CD and continue. I have the orginal Microsoft WinXP SP1 installation cd in the drive, but it still says it can't find the file. I have tried a cdrom, a dvd rom, no luck. I have tried another copy of Winxp sp1, no luck. I have read many posts about this, but all state the problem is with burning the xp disc. Mine is original, not a copy. Any help please.

Microsoft tech-net article explaining how to do what you describe,,,
However!!! since you've installed this on a new motherboard, The issue seems to lie mostly in the software activation isssue of win xp.. Too many changes and the OS locks up in order to prevent piracy,,,,
If you have a different Hard drive you might try to install to it without the other (already installed system) then later, slave, it and copy over your important files ,,First off Have you made sure the cd is cleaned,,, ??? Also , From some other post, I saw Someone had tried almost 30 times, and later found that the speed of the cd reading was a factor and that if you could use a cd rom with only a 40 times read speed , copying over the file would them work,,, any other speed didn't .... At least for them...
If any of my suggestions don't work,, I apologize in advance,
If you are able to you might slave the drive into a known clean computer and first off check with anti-virus and then try to boot into recovery console for a repair,,
Didn't see any replies to your post and thought I might be able to help.. or start a few other suggestions of things to look at,,, Hope you find the answer your looking for,,, Maybe someone else may have a more definitive answer for you... and chime in with the ,,, Solution!!! Good Luck! and Have fun Huh!!
