I wanna install xp but at the 39 minute mark it says it can't find the asms file needed. I try to go to the command prompt to type in regedit as every forum and microsofts support site says to do but the command prompt starts off

c:\windows\system32\

and when I type regedit.exe after that it says the profram cannot execute it?!?!?!?!?!

PLEASE help!!! I have used a win98 CD to no avail. I used the xp boot disks to no progress!!! This is a tough one!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi Dave, hello everyone

Dave,

At C:\Windows\System32 type cd..
then press [Enter].

This will take you to C:\Windows, where you can now type regedit.exe

Best Regards,
Mesich

Calm down DAVE. Trying to format while in windows is like trying to saw off the limb you are sitting on. You simply need to understand a little better what you are trying to do. Once that happens then you will find your way. When it comes to solving windows errors you have the right person helping you in mesich.

Hi Dave, OtheHill, hello everyone

OtheHill,

I liked the analogy of sawing off the limb which one is sitting on. :-) Thank you for the very kind words also.

Dave,

Too better understand can you give us the "big picture", in what you are doing.

Are you upgrading a previous version of Windows or are you performing a full install?

Do you have links to Microsoft which you mentioned in your original post? Please provide them if you can.

Is the WinXP disk a "Full Versison" or an "Upgrade Version"?

Best Regards,
Mesich

OK, I wiped the HD and tried to install xp via boot disks and then insertd the CD as it asked which is the full version I presume. It is not the original CD but the CD has worked before. The link to the microsoft site I used is
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=311755

and describes the exact problem I have yet no solution works. I friend of mine says that regedit doesn't work because it doesn't exist since the OS isn't yet fully installed, although I don't buy that.

I think in the end I'll have to transfer the HD to another computer I have, wipe it again, install win98 and from there upgrade to xp with xp CD. But any more help b4 I do would be appreciated

Hi DAVE, hello everyone,

How is the hard drive partitioned, Fat32 or NTFS?

Think about it. How can regedit (registry editor) work until Windows is installed and the registry has been created.

Hi OtheHill,

You and his friend are 100% correct.

In the article from Microsoft it states, "If the hard disk is formatted with the NTFS file system and you are upgrading an earlier version of Windows, use one of the following methods".

If one is upgrading from an earlier version the registry would exist and could be accessed. In DAVE's case he formatted the hard drive, removing the user.dat and system.dat files, thus the registry.

Best Regards,
Mesich

I installed win98 perfectly and then wanted to upgrade to xp but in the end I get the same ASMS error and regedit still doesn't work even though win98 is technically installed. This is a hopeless case.

Hi DAVE,

If you installed Win98 then the partition is FAT32 and not NTFS.

Start the computer with a Win98 Bootdisk.

Type fdisk and press [Enter].

Select [Y] to Large Disk Support.

Select option #4 to display partition information.

What does it show there?

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi Dave, OtheHill, hello everyone,

DAVE,

You are following the procedure in the link from Microsoft for a drive that is partitioned as NTFS.

You need to follow the resolution immediatly below Hard disk formatted with FAT or FAT32 file system.

What this procedure does is copy the necessary files to the hard drive which will then allow you to copy the setup files for WinXp directly to the hard drive. You will then be able to run the setup directly from the hard drive and not the WinXp CD.
This should get rid of the error you are receiving.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi DAVE, hello everyone,

Are you getting the error when trying to copy the files from the CD to the floppy or when trying to copy the I386 folder from the CD to the hard drive?

No, I'm not stumped. ;-)

Mesich
